Council calls for two ferry option

Renfrewshire Council is backing a two-ferry option to safeguard the transport future of the river crossing at Renfrew.
Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) has announced that it will be bringing in a new vessel for the Renfrew ferry service.
And while Renfrewshire Council welcomes the forthcoming investment, council leader Derek Mackay is calling for not one, but two ferries to be available on the Renfrew to Yoker ferry service in the future.
"This is an important route used by nearly 150,000 people every year," said Derek Mackay.
"That's why we will continue to push for two vessels and not one."
"There have been two vessels up to now. Why not continue a tried and trusted system which has proved its worth when the new investment comes to be made?"
Councillor Marie McGurk, Renfrewshire Council's representative on SPT, added: "Clearly its possible there will be times when the new vessel will need maintenance at a level which requires it to be taken out of service temporarily. That would cause a major disruption. Our aim is to see a solution which absolutely safeguards the reliability of this essential transport link. That's why the council will continue to make the case for investment in a two vessel service."
